Computation of Theoretical Maximum Daily Intake of Pesticides by Korean Population

Abstract
In order to evaluate the acceptability of Korea maximum residue limits (MRLs) residue for pesticides, theoretical maximum daily intake and risk index in terms of the percentage of toxicologically acceptable daily intake were calculated for individual components. Among the 202 pesticides whose MRLs were established before 1998, 35 pesticides exceeded the 80% risk index. For these components, dietary intakes by nominated crops, non-nominated crops, and meats were calculated separately, and appropriate measures to lower the risk index were proposed. On the other hand, 38 pesticides whose MRLs were established under different criteria since 2000 did not exceed the 80% risk index. Temporary ADIs were granted for pesticides without ADI using a safety factor of 200 toward NOEL values.
